OK, stop thinking of text messaging as something teenagers do to pass notes around in class. Text messaging can be a very useful tool for grown-ups, too—which is why you see business folks looking down at their mobile phone screen as they walk over little old ladies on the sidewalk.
Google not-so-recently introduced it's own texting service, Google SMS, to help average joes find information while on the run such as the:
- stocks
- flight times
- businesses addresses
- driving directions
- local movie times
- weather
Here's how you do it:
How is my stock doing?
Type: Stock and Ticker, i.e., STOCK JBCM
Is my flight on time?
- Type: Airline Code and Flight Number, i.e., AA 1216
- Gives you relatively updated information on the status of your flight. If it's delayed, it may take a few minutes for that to be registered.
How do I get from point A to point B?
- Type: From ADDRESS to ADDRESS, i.e., From 100 W. Wacker 60601 to 210 South Canal 60606
- Note: If the directions involve more than a few turns, expect to receive 3 or 4 messages.
Where is a business?
- Type: BUSINESS ZIP, i.e., Best Buy 60626
- In this example, you will receive locations for all the Best Buys in a 10-mile (or so) area. Be set to receive several messages.
What's weather today?
- Type: Weather ZIP, i.e., Weather 60626
- Displays the current weather and a 3-day forecast.
What time (and where) is a movie playing?
- Type: Movie Title ZIP, i.e., Forgetting Sarah Marshall 60626
- Google will send all the theaters in or near the ZIP code playing your movie.
There are dozens of more searches you can do using Google SMS, and you can find them at Google's Web site.
Note: What you can't Google using Google SMS is random information, such as "Was Sam Adams a president?"
